Trapped in norm; respectable realms.
British politeness; strictly reserved.
Bound never to venture into reality;
Concealed within cages of weather.
When will we learn? What will it take
To crash and break out of this prison
To dare to bare the soul, to be real –
Not dramatic, nor robotic, but alive…
I crave this freedom to wonder, to talk
Of meaningful concepts, real ideas:
Struggles, fears, joys, sorrows, loves,
Paradoxes, complexities, unknowns.
Could it change society? Change me?
Without challenge there is no growth.
Current structures ooze despair;
Chained by lies, guilt and false smiles
What is weather? Is there a metaphor
Or acceptable segway into reality?
Or must I provoke that shocked look
At every unprovoked venture of life?
What is conversation worth at all
If it cannot be spent on lasting value?
What am I, if not permitted to express
Anything of myself, my mind, my life?
Perhaps folks are more comfortable
To be themselves only in strict circles
Intimate friendships, long invested.
Then why do we ask ‘how are you’…?!
So many other cultures talk openly
Without fearing weather’s revenge
Long conversations, blunt and frank
Wholly real, with complete strangers.
I crave this openness, this way of life;
Untethered by British respectability
Unafraid of the surprised expressions
Willing to speak truth, to question all.
